Here are some photos from our recent travels to New York and Texas.

Maower

We learned today from Andria, Katie's old roommate and bridesmaid, that our old cat Maower has lymphoma. Andria, Katie, and I found him in the fall of 2000 when we visited an animal shelter in Chicago. There was never really any doubt as to which cat we would pick, because when Katie held Maower (which Rawson told us was German for "wall"), she started laughing uncontrollably at his sheer girth. He has some pretty endearing qualities, like whining for tuna, placing his full weight on your lap, and angrily pooping in corners because his previous owners had removed the claws he otherwise would have used to destroy our legs. But he's ultimately a sweet cat, and Andria's been lucky to have him for the past five years.

Maower is eleven now, we think, and still alive and kicking. He has had many names: Simba, Malachy, Fatty, Maower, etc. But most importantly, he's had a life full of good tuna, good owners, and a tubby butt. Long live the 27 lbs. feline--we will miss him.

Update: Maower died. Long live the fat cat.

Green, Greene, and Rabbi Greenburg

Our friends Susan Green and Adam Greene were married by Rabbi Greenburg on the eastern edge of the greens of Central Park. Oddly enough, there was a lot of green flowers at the wedding. And they made the Times.

We've been busy

Since the bar exam, we've been traveling a bit and celebrating a bit, and we've attached some pictures of our activities above. There's also a few more pics up on Chris and Jenny's website, Roenblog.

For now, though, we're getting ready to head east, to Beijing. In fact, we leave one week from today. We'll keep it professional over at our other blog, Boulder2Beijing, while keeping friends and family entertained on this one. Please keep in touch.

Gaza

Sometimes the European and American media report on world events in entirely different ways. For example, the Guardian has some truly unique coverage on the recent developments in Gaza. News outlets in the United States, however, would probably never even think of publishing such an article.

Dinner, Dogs, and Degrees

Sorry about the lack of posts recently. With bar study, it's been a bit busy around here. The picture below is of a delicious meal we made out of the America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook. I highly recommend the cookbook.

The picture below, on the other hand, is of Bill and Shirley's rapidly growing puppy, Wadi. He's taken to chewing on anything available, though thankfully our cat does not fit into that category.

Finally, I was interviewed about vulnerability markets for an article in New Scientist Magazine. I did not get quoted, however, as the author wanted to focus on some of the legal and economic arguments.

Bolder Boulder and Boulder Creek Festival

We learned today that the Bolder Boulder, the second largest organized 10K in the United States, leaves from about two blocks west of our new place. So, we went out on our bicycles, took pictures, and then got a bunch of free stuff from the Boulder Creek Festival. (We win, Karli!)

New Digs

Here are a few photos of our new place in Boulder. We put all of our stuff in storage and moved into this furnished place. We will be at this address until August 15, when the owner comes back from her summer in South America and we head off on our next adventure in Beijing.

Memorial Day Weekend in Boulder

Today Micah and I treated ourselves to brunch at a restaurant in Boulder called "The Kitchen Cafe". It was delicious. Afterwards we went for a walk around town and took a few photos at a community garden.

Below is another picture of Wadi, the new family dog back at the farm in Kansas. Below that is a picture of Naavah, our cat, who is on temporary loan to the Roenbaughs while we head off to China for a year. As Katie's dad put it, "our new animals have made us laugh more often." Us too.

Katie's Tornado Pics

Katie went home to help clean up from the tornadoes that ravaged central Kansas. Here's pictures from around the local community, as well as the day she spent as a volunteer in Greensburg.

Here's three storm chaser videos, the first of the Greensburg F5 on Friday, the second of the tornado that went through Radium last night, and third taken last night at an unknown location. A fourth video from Saturday of a funnel outside Great Bend is also available.







Jeff Gammons, a storm videographer, has some good maps on his website that track the storms, as well as links to other photography and videos. The Lope has some photography that captures Greensburg before the storm.

75 more, and not just in Greensburg

Based on the family's morning damage survey, it looks like a funnel dropped down in the middle of Trousdale, and then popped back up as it headed north-east through Edwards County, passing directly over Grandma Joy's house before it dropped back down and headed into Macksville. Several roofs were ripped off of houses in Trousdale, and all of the windows in the church blew out. But there's another round of storms scheduled for tonight, so we're not out of the woods yet.

Some media outlets are stating that at least 75 tornadoes were reported last night. President Bush and Governor Sebelius both declared Kiowa county a disaster area, entitling Greensburg and surrounding communities to relief. But the Presidential declaration assumes that the tornadoes simply stopped at the Kiowa county border. They did not.
